What to Wear Flats Fishing: A Women’s Guide

Flats fishing asks a lot from what you wear. The sun is relentless, the heat builds fast, saltwater gets everywhere, and a quiet stalk can turn into a deep wade without warning.

The best flats-fishing outfit keeps you covered, comfortable, mobile, and ready to stay on the water: a breathable UPF sunshirt, quick-drying leggings or pants, a neck gaiter, a secure hat, polarized sunglasses, and footwear matched to the bottom.

This guide builds on a real saltwater test from Fishe founder Linda Leary, who wore Fishe leggings while chasing bonefish in the Turks and Caicos Islands. Her original field-tested answers are preserved below, along with a practical packing list, saltwater care guidance, product recommendations, and FAQs.

Quick summary

Build a simple, sun-smart flats system

Choose lightweight layers that cover exposed skin without restricting your cast. Prioritize quick-drying fabric, secure fit, glare protection, and footwear that can handle sand, shells, coral, or uneven limestone.

The clothing system

What should women wear flats fishing?

A strong flats-fishing outfit protects exposed skin without trapping unnecessary heat. It should let you cast, crouch, step into a skiff, and wade without constant adjustment.

UPF fishing top

Choose long sleeves, breathable fabric, and enough stretch for a full casting motion.

Quick-drying bottoms

Leggings or lightweight pants should stay secure, move freely, and dry quickly after wading.

Neck gaiter

Cover the neck, ears, and lower face where sunscreen can be easy to miss.

Secure hat

Open flats can be windy, so use a brim and fit that will stay put.

Polarized sunglasses

Polarized lenses help reduce glare, read bottom changes, and spot fish.

Bottom-ready footwear

Match your sole and ankle protection to sand, coral, shells, or limestone.

Lightweight coverage helps protect your arms while keeping your casting motion unrestricted.

Start at the top

Choose coverage that still moves

Start with the Beauty and the Bonefish 1/4 Zip Sunshirt or another lightweight fishing top that allows a full casting motion.

Pair it with quick-drying leggings or pants that will not sag, bind, or stay waterlogged after wading. Add a neck tube for the areas that are easy to miss with sunscreen, plus a hat and sunglasses that block UVA and UVB rays.

The goal is full coverage without stiffness.

Sun, heat, and saltwater

Why full coverage can feel better in the heat

It can seem counterintuitive to wear long sleeves and full-length leggings in tropical weather. In practice, lightweight technical coverage can reduce direct sun exposure while limiting the need to stop and reapply sunscreen to large areas.

UPF 50 fabric is commonly described as blocking about 98 percent of UV radiation. Clothing should still be paired with sunscreen, shade when available, a hat, and UV-blocking sunglasses rather than treated as a complete solution by itself.

“Cover the skin without restricting the cast.”

Movement first

“Choose fabric that dries quickly after a deep wade.”

Saltwater ready

“Avoid heavy cotton and seams that rub.”

All-day comfort

Field-tested by Linda Leary

Fishe leggings on the bonefish flats

When the flats fishing is on fire but temperatures are rising, can you count on your Fishe leggings to carry you through? The answer is yes! Fishe Founder Linda Leary tested out a pair of Troutrageous Rainbow leggings during a saltwater fishing trip to the Turks and Caicos Islands a couple years ago, and they were the perfect attire for long days in the heat, sun, and saltwater. Linda answers some commonly-asked questions about wearing Fishe leggings for warm weather and saltwater fishing below:

Will my Fishe leggings protect me from the sun and ultraviolet rays?

Yes! Fishing in the islands, my Fishe leggings were great sun protection. Our leggings have a UPF 50+ rating, which is the maximum UPF rating for fabrics. Fishe leggings block 98% of both UVA and UVB rays, so you can cast all day and avoid sunburn.

Will it be too hot to wear my leggings?

No! My leggings were really comfortable in the hot weather. Fishe leggings are breathable, which helps keep you cooler, and they wick away the sweat from your body on hot days.

Will my colorful Fishe leggings scare the fish?

No! I spent days sneaking up on pods of spooky bonefish that were feeding on the flats, and my leggings never gave me away. It was incredible fishing!

Can I swim in my leggings?

Absolutely! And Fishe leggings are fast-drying, so if you’re wading on the flats, getting in the water to land a fish, or just going in for a swim you’ll be dry again in no time.

How should I care for my Fishe leggings if I’m wearing them in salt water?

After wearing your leggings in salt water, rinse them immediately and thoroughly with cold, fresh water, so the salt does not accumulate on the fabric. Then wash them with mild soap and cold water and hang to dry. They’ll be ready to go for the next day!

Quick-drying leggings provide coverage and freedom of movement for wading, casting, and long skiff days.

Color on the flats

Do bright fishing clothes scare bonefish?

Bonefish are famously alert, but clothing color is only one part of a much larger picture. Sudden movement, heavy footfalls, poor approach angles, shadows crossing the fish, and inaccurate casts are usually more disruptive than a pattern printed on your leggings.

Quiet movement and good positioning matter most. Keep a low profile, listen to your guide, avoid unnecessary motion, and let the fish’s direction determine your approach.

Pack with purpose

Flats-fishing packing checklist

Wear

UPF long-sleeve fishing shirt, quick-drying leggings or pants, neck gaiter, secure hat, polarized sunglasses, and bottom-appropriate footwear.

Protect

Broad-spectrum sunscreen, lip protection, sunglasses retainer, and a light rain or wind layer.

Hydrate

Refillable water bottle, electrolytes, and any guide-recommended snacks or essentials.

Keep dry

Phone pouch, medication protection, small towel, dry change of clothes, and a reusable bag for wet gear.

Post-fishing care

How to care for fishing clothes after saltwater use

Salt left in fabric can make performance clothing feel stiff and can shorten the useful life of elastic fibers, zippers, and hardware. Rinse clothing and gear with cool fresh water as soon as practical.

Wash technical clothing according to its care label, avoid harsh bleach or high heat unless the label specifically permits it, and let every layer dry fully before packing it away.

Do the same for gaiters, hats, sunglasses retainers, shoes, and bags. A five-minute rinse after the trip is easier than trying to rescue gear after salt has dried into it.

Responsible fishing

Bonefish handling matters, too

Keep a bonefish in the water whenever possible, wet your hands before touching it, minimize handling time, and have the camera ready before lifting the fish for a quick photo.

Avoid contact with the gills and support the fish rather than squeezing it. Follow your guide and local regulations.

Yes. Quick-drying performance leggings can provide sun coverage and unrestricted movement for casting and wading.

Are leggings too hot for tropical fishing?

Lightweight, breathable leggings can be comfortable in tropical conditions, especially when they reduce direct sun exposure.

What UPF rating is best for flats fishing?

UPF 50 or 50+ is a strong choice for long days on exposed water.

Do bright fishing clothes scare bonefish?

Movement, shadows, noise, and presentation usually matter more than a colorful print.

Can you swim in fishing leggings?

Many performance fishing leggings can handle swimming and wading. Rinse them thoroughly with fresh water after saltwater use.

Should I wear shorts or pants on the flats?

Pants or full-length leggings provide more sun and abrasion coverage.

What shoes should I wear for wading the flats?

Choose footwear based on the bottom and ask your guide before traveling.

Do I still need sunscreen under UPF clothing?

Apply sunscreen to all exposed skin and to areas where clothing may shift.

How do I wash fishing clothes after saltwater use?

Rinse promptly in cool fresh water, wash according to the garment label, and let items dry fully.

What should I bring in my flats-fishing day bag?

Bring sun protection, water, electrolytes, a rain or wind layer, a dry change, phone protection, medication, and guide-recommended essentials.

Ready for the flats

Wear the system. Focus on the fish.

The best flats-fishing outfit should fade into the background once the fishing begins. Build around breathable coverage, quick-drying bottoms, thoughtful face and eye protection, and footwear matched to the bottom.

When your clothing works, you can focus on the nervous water, the next cast, and the fish moving across the flat.
