The print, the products, and the mountain-water story
Mt. Cutty: A Cutthroat Trout Pattern Built for Life Outside
Mt. Cutty turns one of the West’s most recognizable native trout into bold gear for fishing days, road trips, trail miles, and everyday adventure. Designed by Fishe artist Irene Meniconi, the print brings together alpine water, layered mountain forms, classic trout speckles, and the unmistakable red-orange slash beneath a cutthroat’s jaw.
This is the story behind the pattern—and a closer look at the Mt. Cutty products that carry it from river to road.

Mt. Cutty combines the fish’s speckles and signature throat slash with the colors and contours of mountain water.

What Inspired the Mt. Cutty Pattern?
The original idea was rooted in the places anglers associate with cutthroat trout: cold streams, alpine lakes, high-country trails, and the rushing water that drains the Pacific Crest and Continental Divide.
Cutthroat trout are named for the bright red or orange markings beneath the lower jaw. The National Park Service also notes their light bodies, dark spotting, and vivid jaw slash—details that make the fish immediately recognizable and gave Irene a natural visual language for the print.
Mountain roots. River rhythm. Mt. Cutty layers the fish’s fiery markings with the shapes, colors, and movement of the landscapes where anglers chase them.
From watercolor to everyday gear
Designed by Fishe Artist Irene Meniconi
Irene Meniconi begins each Fishe design with an anatomically recognizable fish, then works with the Fishe team to identify the species details and story elements worth amplifying.
For Mt. Cutty, those elements included the fish’s spotted body, the flash of color at its throat, and the mountain habitat that makes pursuing cutthroat feel like an adventure before the first cast is made.
Irene’s watercolor-and-ink approach gives the print its movement and organic texture. Read the full Fishe Meet the Artist feature on Irene Meniconi to see how her concepts move from accurate fish drawings to finished patterns.

The Original 2021 Mt. Cutty Launch Note
The original launch captured the excitement of welcoming a new fish and a new mountain-inspired print into the Fishe family. We preserved it here as part of the story:
It’s finally here, Fishe’s newest design, Mt. Cutty! Here’s to a fish that thrives in some of our most cherished landscapes, in the alpine lakes and the rushing waters that drain the Pacific Crest and the Continental Divide. Created by Fishe artist Irene Meniconi, Mt. Cutty brings to life everything that inspires us about cutthroat trout: their mountain habitat, their classic speckles, and of course their blood-red slash. Do you stay awake at night dreaming of hiking the Rockies in search of high altitude fishing spots, casting dry flies on the Elk River in British Columbia, or scouring the Utah backcountry to complete a Cutthroat Slam? We know you do, and we know you’ll be as pumped as we are to welcome Mt. Cutty to the Fishe family. These are exciting times here at Fishe. In addition to launching a full collection of Mt. Cutty gear and apparel, we’ll be hosting an open house to show off the new space expansion of our Anchorage store. Come celebrate with us!
Historical note: the open house mentioned above was part of the original October 2021 launch.

Why Cutthroat Country Keeps Calling Anglers Back
For many anglers, catching a cutthroat is inseparable from the journey: hiking higher, reading clear water, exploring a new drainage, and finding a fish that belongs to that landscape.
The Utah Cutthroat Slam is one modern example. The challenge asks anglers to catch Utah’s four native cutthroat subspecies in their native ranges, while registration funds support native-trout conservation projects. The Utah Division of Wildlife Resources reported new Slam-funded restoration and outreach projects for 2026.
That connection between fish, place, and stewardship is part of what gives Mt. Cutty staying power. The print is colorful, but the story beneath it is grounded in real water and the people who keep returning to it.
